Our History: The Kiwanis Club of Nevada, IA was chartered in April of 1972 with 60 members! Since it conception we have supported Nevada and the surrounding communities in a variety of ways including being the charter organization for Cub Scouts Pack 128 in Nevada, Nevada Key Club, and the 3/4 K Kids, sponsoring the Nevada High School Key Club, providing scholarships for students planning to attend post-secondary school, contributing to the Kiwanis International’s ELIMINATE campaign, supporting the local Community Cupboard, helping with annual events such as Bicycle safety, Halloween Patrol, cooking and serving at Food at First, and volunteering at Harmony Clothing Closet.
History of Kiwanis International: Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 by a group of businessmen in Detroit, Michigan. The organization was originally called the “Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers”, but changed its name to Kiwanis a year later. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from a Native American expression, “Nunc Kee-wanis,” which means, “We trade.” In the early years, members focused on business networking but in 1919, the organization changed its focus to service, specifically service to children. Kiwanis became an international organization with the founding of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis clubs formed in communities across the United States and Canada until the 1960s, when worldwide expansion was approved. Today, Kiwanis clubs are helping children thrive, prosper and grow in nearly 80 nations and geographic locations. All people are welcome to participate in the Kiwanis movement of improving communities for children. In 1987, women were invited to join, In 2008, delegates approved a resolution that calls for Kiwanis clubs to celebrate and foster inclusiveness.
Today: Currently, there are more than 7,300 Kiwanis Clubs with more than 198,900 members in 82 nations and geographic areas. Kiwanis International continues to grow and expand internationally. Its commitment to service still remains strong and Kiwanians provide millions of service hours around the world each year.
Motto: In 1920, the motto of Kiwanis became “We Build.” It remained the motto until 2005, when members voted to change it to “Serving the Children of the World.”
Youth Organizations: Kiwanis clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. To reach more people and have a greater service impact on their communities, many clubs sponsor a family club: K-Kids for primary school children; Builders Clubs for adolescents; Key Clubs for teens; Circle K clubs for university students and Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities.
Service Emphasis: Kiwanis will be a positive influence in communities worldwide, so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive. The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus through The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus: a disease that kills 34,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. Tetanus causes extreme sensitivity to light, sound and contact, even preventing the comfort of a mother’s touch. The Eliminate Project is our chance to help protect the connection between mother and child. We are closing in on our goal to raise US$110 million and save or protect 55 million lives. The end of this disease means the beginning of better health for so many of these families.
The Six Objects of Kiwanis that follow:
To give primacy to the human rather than material values of life.
To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships
To promote the adoption and application of higher social business and professional standards.
To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and idealism, which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
